“Welcome to Ganache! Would you like to try one of our signature macarons?”

I smiled at the bubbly greeting from one of the cashiers as she recognized me coming through the front door. The sweet smells of cake, chocolate, and cream blended themselves in the air, creating an aroma that made my mouth water, but sat heavily on my stomach, which was still knots. Instead of my normal routine of stopping to speak to the customers, I settled for a friendly wave as I hurried through the shop and into the back.

In my office, I dropped my ignored proposals onto my desk, then held on to the edge as panic gripped my chest again. Even if I did actually go through with releasing his information, it didn’t mean anything. We’d both just be screwed.

I closed my eyes, willing my heart to stop racing. Two months to pack up a business I’d poured everything into for the last five years, and I’d done everything I could do. Maybe Braxton would show me mercy? No, that wasn’t the right way to put it. He’d already denied me mercy, right to my face, so the threat of embarrassment to his family, losing money, ruining business relationships… maybe that would deter him.

Or maybe not.

Maybe he wasn’t afraid of that. Maybe he didn’t really care. A place in the family business had been forced on him, based on the profile Willow and I had put together, developed from the treasure trove of information on him we’d dug around and found. Braxton was smart, and business-minded, but he was also a bit of a wild child. There was a reasonable chance that he would wait me out, or move up the demolition to give me even less time, or… hell, I wouldn’t be completely shocked if he hired some shady character to break my kneecaps on principal, not caring if I released the info like I’d said.

He was a wild card.

But I had to try.

My cell rang, with the tone I’d reserved just for Willow, who’d been my best friend in the world since I knew what a friend was. Damned near my sister. Still, I wasn’t in the mood to tell her yet that Braxton had essentially told me to fuck off, even though she’d probably seen the entire thing on camera.

The phone stopped ringing, and I let out a relieved sigh, still standing with my head bent toward the desk. My stomach was finally calming down, lessening the chance that I would puke, but then it rang a second time.

Willow again, and it had to be bad for her call twice.

Shit.

“Hey Will,” I said, after digging the phone from my purse. “What’s going on?”

She sounded out of breath as she answered. “Braxton Drake just walked—”

“Put the phone down.”

A chill ran up my spine at the sound of Braxton’s voice right behind me. Willow was still yammering away, her voice squeaking at me from the phone’s speaker as I pulled it away from my ear.
